David Beckham

One of the biggest stories of the week has been the loan transfer of David Beckham to AC Milan. I feel this is a great move for all concerned. Phil McNulty of the BBC said he felt that the only person who may lose out in this is Beckham himself but I don't believe this to be the case.
Most football fans would probably agree that "Becks" isn't quite the player he was, but the speed of the game in Italy should suit his style of play to the ground. Serie A is far slower than the Premier League and La Liga and this will allow Beckham to utilise his passing ability possibly more than ever as he will be allowed more time on the ball. He's never been a player to take on defenders because he hasn't needed to. Juan Sebastian Veron wasn't the player he was in Italy because of the pace of the Premier League, yet David Beckham was and should have no trouble adjusting especially given the quality of players he will have around him.
It is evident that he is still in top shape and his brief cameo appearances for England of late have been very rewarding. What's more, his professionalism has never been in doubt and he will work hard to ensure he is a success. When left out of the Madrid team, he got on with what he had to do and through sheer will and effort forced Fabio Capello to have a rethink, which is no mean feat. What's more he has accepted his demotion within the England Squad with equal maturity as is happy to be a part of the team, helping in any way he can, particularly with Theo Walcott and his new found stardom. I firmly believe he will carry this with him to Milan and provide another excellent role model to the young players in the setup.
It is a harsh reality, but the signing of Beckham will sell Milan shirts, especially in Asia, which will benefit the Rossonieri, but this is only one of many things that Beckham will bring to the Italian club. Even if not picked to start, once brought onto the field he will display all the commitment he has throughout his career and attempt to influence the game for the benefit of Milan. He will combine well with Ronaldinho, Kaka and Pirlo amongst others and will be able to pick them out in advanced attacking positions. Furthermore, it will be an interesting debate as to who gets to take the free kicks with so many high class dead ball specialists within the side.
Come March, Fabio Capello will also have access to a player who will be match fit, for the Spring Qualifiers, despite the MLS regular season finishing in 2008 and not restarting until March 2009. The Italian had previously stated he wouldn't pick a player for England who wasn't playing regular football and this enables Beckham to continue the International career he loves so dearly. Capello obviously see's a role for him, as it was he who recommended both the club and player to each other. The Italian is not one for sentiment and must feel that Beckham's talents can be used in England's drive towards South Africa 2010. Finally, barring injuries, the LA Galaxy will receive a fully fit David Beckham as they look to reverse their poor form that has been the story of their season this year. After the spell spent in Italy he will be able to bring new experiences to his team mates in the States and they will be aiming to qualify for the post season and make a determined effort to win the MSL title.
