One sport that makes fans go mad in Mexico is Football! Mexico national team has qualified for thirteen FIFA world cups and did not miss even a single world cup since 1994. Currently the team ranked 24th as per FIFA world rankings. Latin Americans gave
Nickname “El Tri” to Mexican football team.

Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FEMEXFUT) is the governing body for Mexico National football team. Currently, the team is honing its skills under the supervision of Coach Javier Aguirre. Coach is getting assistance from Mario Carillo and former Mexican defender Manuel Vidrio. Best performance in World Cups by the national football of Mexico was reaching quarterfinals twice in 1970 and 1986. Both the world cups held in Mexico.

Mexico played its first ever international match on January 1, 1923 against Guatemala. They won the friendly match by 2-3. 1928 Summer Olympics, Uruguay was the first international tournament for Mexican national football team. The team played tree matches in the tournament lost one match to Spain however, manages to draw the other two.   

National football team of Mexico was one of the teams that played first FIFA world cup in 1930. Argentina, France and Chile were in the same group of Mexico. Juan Carreno scored the first goal of world cup for Mexico against France. From 1930 to 1950 Mexico played all FIFA world cups. Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal was the first player to play five world cups in a row.

On June 7, 1962 Mexico national football team registered its first FIFA world cup win. They beat Czechoslovakia by 3-1. In 1970, they beat El Salvador by 4-0 to enter into the quarterfinals of the world cup. It was the first instance when Mexico reaches the quarterfinals of the world championship. The team again reaches the quarterfinals in 1986 world cup after defeating Belgium and Iraq by 2-1 and 1-0, respectively.

From 1994 to 2006 Mexican team could not reach the quarterfinals of any world cup. However, they proved their mettle in other international tournaments. In CONCACAF Championships, they come out as champions eight times out of twenty, most recently in 2009. And they consecutively won three championships in 1993, 1996, and 1998.

In Copa America championship, Mexican national football team competed with best of South America’s football teams. And the team finished second in 1993 and 2001 and thrice at third place in 1997, 1999, and 2007.  Also, Mexican team has very good statistics in Pan American Games. They shine out as champions thrice and won three silver and two bronze medals in all fifteen tournaments from 1951 to 2007.

Six gold medals in Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) has established Mexico national football team as one of the strongest football playing nation in South America. Except 1950 and 1978, Mexican team never returned without a medal from CACs. And they touch another milestone by winning FIFA Confederation Cup in 1999. To clinch the title, team encountered with world’s number one team Brazil and Mexicans beat Brazilians by 4-3.

Claudio Suarez played 177 international matches for Mexico; highest by any Mexican football player which is also a world record. And top scorer in Mexican football history is Jared Borgetti. The striker scored 46 goals in his 89 international appearances.

Presently, the kit of Mexico national football team consists of green jersey and white shorts with red socks while playing any home game. And playing away from home, green shorts and white jersey and socks become the Mexican team’s kit.

Current Mexico national football team is led by 30 year old Rafael Marquez. Apart for playing as a captain for Mexican team the defensive midfielder also plays for FC Barcelona. He has played 86 international football matches for Mexico as a defender and was a part of 1999 FIFA Confederations cup and 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning team.

As of now, Mexican football team is playing round 4 of world cup qualifiers. The team is quite young however will get support from experienced mid fielders Gerrardo Terrado and Cuauhtémoc Blanco. Both midfielders have played more than 100 international football matches for Mexico. And Cuauhtémoc Blanco is top scorer from the current squad with 35 goals.

Opponents need to face Mexican dexterous goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa to score. The agile goalkeeper of Mexico national football team was a third choice goalkeeper in 2006 FIFA world cup and played 2007 Copa America cup and CONCACAF in 2007. And was a part of 2009 CONCACAF Gold cup winning team.  Among defenders of the present Mexican team Carlos Salcido and Ricardo Osorio are the most experienced players. They served national football team of Mexico in 65 and 69 matches, respectively.

Mexico national football team has recently called up its former goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez for world cup qualifier against Honduras. The 35 years old Mexican goalkeeper has played 98 international football matches for Mexico.

New faces of the Mexican squad includes mid fielder Néstor Calderón. HE is playing for Club Toluca. In September 2009, he will be a part of the Mexican team to play against Honduras and Costa Rica for the world cup qualifiers. Other new bee in the team is Marco Fabian. He plays at forward position. The 20 years old footballer was playing for CD Guadalajara before coming to the international arena.

Mexico Under-20 and Under-17 national football teams are two junior football teams. The young players represent their skillset quite often and back the national team as well. The Under-17 football team won 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship. And the team already qualified for 20009 FIFA Under-17 World Championship which is going to be held in Nigeria.
National football team of Mexico is participating in world cup qualifiers. And Mexican team is stepping up the ladder everyday. The team has won 9 out of last 11 qualifier matches and did not loose even a single one.

The Mexican team is practicing earnestly to nail down Columbia, Honduras and El Salvador in their forthcoming encounter.
