Fifa Brazil World Cup 2014: Oceania Qualifying

Tuesday, 16th October 2012 at 06:24am

New Zealand moved a step closer to a second successive World Cup Playoff after a 2-0 win away at bottom of the table Tahiti.

The All Whites thrashed the Solomon Islands 6-1 in their previous encounter but were made to work much harder by the Oceania minnows.

Shane Smeltz opened the scoring after 24minutes but New Zealand had to wait until the 82 minute to make the points safe when Ben Sigmund struck.

New Caledonia look like the only challengers to New Zealand after they beat the Solomon Islands 6-2 away from home.

The visitors led 2-1 at half time but were pegged back on the hour mark by Joses Nawo. That was as good as it got for the home side as New Caledonia bagged a further four goals with Georges Gope-Fenepej completing a hat trick.
