Fifa announces World Cup vote change
Wednesday, 1st June 2011 at 16:22pm
Fifa President Sepp Blatter has revealed that the voting system used to determine the hosts of future World Cups will now be changed and all 208 Fifa member nations will be given the chance to vote.
In the past, the decision has been made by Fifa's 24-man Executive Committee.
But following all the controversy that has erupted after December's vote which saw the 2018 World Cup head to Russia and the 2022 Cup go to Qatar, Fifa has decided to act.
"I want to give more power to the national associations," said Blatter, who is set be re-elected on Wednesday.
"In the future, the World Cup will be decided by the Fifa congress. The executive committee will create a shortlist - but will make no recommendations, only a list - and the congress will decide on the venue."
The past seven days have been among the darkest in Fifa's long history with claim and counter claims of corruption being made by a number of its members.
Blatter now believes it is time for Fifa to put it all behind them and work hard on rebuilding its damaged reputation; something he feels can be done under his leadership.
"The Fifa ship is in troubled waters but this ship must be brought back on the right track," he added.
"I am the captain of the ship. It is therefore my duty and responsibility to see to it that we get back on track.
"Reforms will be made and not just touch-ups but radical decisions. We have made mistakes, but we will draw our conclusions.
"We have been hit and I personally have been slapped. I don't want that ever again.
"We must stop once and for all, all these ugly criticisms, allegations, insinuations of cheating left, right and centre."

I say every world cup should be played in a different continent, allowing the countries of that continent to bid for it making it easier to select a country

It would be smarter to have a lottery of teams that want the opportunity to have the world cup held in the country. Each country would have a plan ready so if they are chosen they will be ready to go straight to work.
